April Music Highlight

We at The Limelight are constantly inspired by the vibrant arts scene that permeates Chicago’s every corner. In hopes to connect our audience to the infinitely talented artists who make it on our radar (Chicago local or not), we present The Limelight Blog’s ‘Artist Highlight’ series! As per our mission statement, we hope to expand our network as wide as we possibly can, and encourage you to share your creative talents with us so we can share YOU with our audience! As always, never stop chasing The Limelight.

GIMMEASEC

YOO! I am Gimmeasec, a homegrown Chicago artist who dives into genres like Rap, R&B, Pop, and whatever I can create. I've had a passion for music since a young age, and at 19, I set out to make a name for myself, putting myself out there since I was 15. I am someone who makes music to exercise the freedom of expression through art, not only to be heard but also to help others who can relate. I've been putting in my 10,000 hours into the things I love and truly want to be known for, as someone from the city who made an impact through their work, and as of right now, I'm working on an EP and preparing for my first (of hopefully many) festivals this summer!

FREE THERAPY by Gimmeasec

On new work releasing in the spring, Gimmeasec says:

The EP coming out this spring is called CLEO. The name CLEO, short for Cleopatra, is historically associated with an icon of love and power. Though it isn't centered on her history, this collection of songs reflects sentiments of romance, emotional intelligence, and the power of love through R&B, neo-soul, alternative, and funk. While this project doesn't have a title track, the music is crafted to convey the idea that love isn’t weakness; instead, it’s a mirror of influence, identity, and control. This project includes collaborations from artists Selection, Seth Arnold, and more to be announced.

GIRL’S PEARLS

I’m an artist & producer from Chicago! I specialize in a lot of different genres and arrangements as I find it dope to always be doing something different sonically. I put thought into it but at the same time I don't, I think art is best when it is free flowing and natural.

MAMA, I’M A TRAILBLAZER! by GIRL’S PEARLS

On MAMA, I’M A TRAILBLAZER! GIRL’S PEARLS says:

Making this song was such a crazy experience, producing it was even more fun than the performance of it. The drums from the “Black keys” with fuckin 808’s over them?!? the psyched out synths were a happy accident, i didn’t intend on having a phaser over them but it came out better than i could’ve planned. But nah, the beat switch on the SECOND VERSE?!?! the japanese taiko drums with 808’s and hi hats over them? man this song is one of those things that make you wonder how you even came up with it. Truly something I want to see a crowd move too.

Wassup y’all I’m Noughtie Dee! I bounce around a lot but the cities I claim are Atlanta and Chicago. I’m an alternative artist which means sometimes I rap, sometimes I sing; sometimes I'm a simp, sometimes I want to pop my shit. I can make you feel the highs of life or the lows of grief. I ebb and flow with what feels pure to me at the moment. I speak about what I’m going through in life as a Black queer person in their 20s. Tap in now or be forced to later!

1104 by Noughtie Dee

On 1104 Noughtie Dee says:

1104 is one of the songs I've dedicated to my late younger brother Dominic on my project Death Doula. It was the last single I released leading up to Death Doula's drop and the first single I made available for free download on my website. It tells the story of keeping busy while battling grief as a means of survival. Nowadays with my music I aim to make people feel something in their core even if they haven't experienced it yet. After listening to 1104, I encourage you to listen to the whole body of work; you won't reach the end of my project with dry eyes. It will only be available to stream through Bandcamp!

Thank you to Gimmeasec, GIRL’S PEARLS, and Noughtie Dee for sharing your art with us. We hope our audience connects to their work like we did!
